It’s your school, it’s your parent council

  • Stephen Leacock Parent Council will be hosting our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in the school library.

Council plays a vital role in connecting parents with the educators who spend countless hours with our children. When you get involved in Parent Council, you’re getting the inside scoop on what’s happening in the classroom, while having the chance to speak up on decisions that will help improve student achievement and school performance.

What does parent council do?
Parent council meets once a month with school staff to discuss what’s happening at the school and how we can work together to make Stephen Leacock one of the best schools in the area. The council also runs many of the programs and events that make our school so great to attend, such as lunch programs, Walk to School Day, the Halloween Dance and so much more. Through fundraising, council allocates  approximately $30,000 annually to purchase educational materials that would not otherwise be funded, such as library resources, new jerseys for our sports teams, technology learning tools, arts workshops and even butterfly larvae for primary students.

When you participate in parent council you’ll have the chance to:

  • Meet other parents at your child’s school
  • Hear first-hand from the principal and other staff what’s really happening in the classroom!
  • Learn about the school’s improvement plan
  • Have your views heard and offer feedback to the principal and staff
  • Help determine how funds raised by parent council are spent to benefit the school’s students

 How you can participate:

  • Check out a meeting! Parent council meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the school library. All parents are welcome, even if you’ve never been to a meeting before. (And did we mention there are snacks?!?)
  • Offer a little bit of your time. We get it – you’re busy! You don’t need to sign your life away to get involved. Some council members just attend meetings. Others help out by picking up snacks for Walk to School Day or making hot chocolate for the Remembrance Day ceremony. There are lots of different ways to help out.
  • Keep in touch! Sign up for our Twitter feed @SLPS to get timely updates like when lunch forms are due or when student clubs are meeting. And be sure to subscribe to the blogs of both the school and parent council – just go to https://slpsparentcouncil.wordpress.com and www.stephenleacock.org and enter your email to get updates on what’s going on at school.
