Next Council Meeting – Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 7:00pm

It’s the last SLPS Council meeting for the 2016/2017 school year!  Please join us on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 7:00pm in the library for a look at this past school year and preliminary planning for the next.

Yard Improvement Plan Update

New School Yard Improvements Coming this Summer!

In Fall 2016, Council applied for funding from the school board for a new set of monkey bars in the Junior Yard. Fortunately, we were awarded the $10,000 we applied for, plus and additional $15,000 for another project to enhance the schoolyard.  The School Council elected to use the additional funds to rehabilitate the area near the flagpole that has experienced chronic drainage issues, and upgrade it to include an outdoor play and learning space.

The total budget for both of these projects is estimated at $60,000, so the School Council will be spending $35,000 of the money raised through fundraising towards these two projects.

Project Details:

A new set of monkey bars with three clusters of boulders will be installed in the Junior Yard.

An outdoor play & learning space featuring boulders, benches, and log seating will be constructed near the flagpole.

These choices are based on the results of the student surveys conducted in the fall and spring, and have the support of the staff. Construction on both projects will be managed by the OCDSB Facilities group, and will occur over the summer, with scheduled completion in September 2017.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at council.slps@gmail.com.

Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey.  Survey respondent names were entered into a draw for an iTunes gift card.  The winner was a student in Mme Lafleur’s Grade 1 class – congratulations!

Staff Appreciation Snack Day – June 16, 2017

Stephen Leacock School Council is hosting a staff appreciation snack day on Friday, June 16, 2017. Snacks will be placed out for the staff throughout the day so that everyone can enjoy.

This is a great opportunity for parents to extend their thanks to the entire school team that makes Stephen Leacock such a great school for our kids.

Snacks can be dropped off at the school office on the morning of June 16, between 7:45 and 8:00 am. If you can’t make that drop off time but would like to contribute, please let us know (council.slps@gmail.com) and we can arrange for a drop off the night before.

Please ensure the snacks are:

  • Nut-free
  • Able to be left un-refrigerated
  • On/in a disposable container OR if you send in a reusable dish please clearly mark your name/child’s name and homeroom so that we can return it to you.

BBQ – Thank You

SLPS Council sends a big Thank You to everyone who came to the Family BBQ on June 1 and an even bigger THANK YOU to all the volunteers who made it happen!

Book Donations to Stephen Leacock Public School

Donations of new or gently used books, in either English or French, are welcome throughout the school year. The books will be used by either the school library or individual classrooms.

Parents can also donate money to the library budget at any time during the year. Cheques should be made payable to Stephen Leacock PS with a note that the money is to be used by the library.

Parents can donate books in lieu of year-end gifts to teachers or other staff members. A bookplate sticker will be placed on the inside cover of the book with the teacher’s name, grade, school year and short message if desired.


Jars! Jars! Jars! Donations Wanted

Jars! Jars! Jars!  Donations wanted for Family BBQ June 1.  Please fill a clear small jar, container, box or bag with fun surprises — toys, trinkets, jewellery, stickers, nut-free candy, etc.  The containers are then available for purchase at the BBQ.  Filled containers can be dropped off at the school office during office hours any day between now and June 1, 2017.  This is a popular event, so the more jars the better!

The next SLPS Council meeting is on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 7:00pm in the library.  Updates on school yard improvement project, reports from staff, and planning for upcoming end-of-year activities.
